The Famen temple is located in Famen Town, 10 kilometers from Baoji City. It is estimated by experts that it was built around 499 BC in the Dynasty of Northern Wei with a history of more than 1500 years. It contains a pagoda with relics of Buddha, the Mahavira Hall, the Underground Palace and the Treasure Hall. The generally layout of the temple largely follows the rule of Tang Dynasty in that it was reconstructed and expanded in Tang Dynasty, when it was reputed as an imperial temple. Many emperors of the Tang Dynasty once welcomed bone relics of Buddha back to the palace for worship, and awarded treasure to the temple, which was stored at the underground palace. The temple is famous for a variety of pagodas and Buddhist relics.
