The Songzanlin Lamasery is the largest Tibetan Buddhism lamasery in Yunnan Province, which also enjoys a unique status of the whole Tibet. Five kilometres from the down town Shangri-la County, a tremendous architectural complex standing in front of the Foping Mountain, the most famous lamasery of the Gelu sect. This place also has the name of "Little Potala Palace" for the alike appearance and landscape. It serves as the highest institution that combines politics and Tibetan Buddhism. In the history, this lamasery had also offered protection to the Dalai Lama VII, Kelsang Gyatso from the chase of the Mongolia King, and finally gained the support of Emperor Kangxi. The long history of this lamasery leaves various treasures to this temple: 8 statues of Sakyamuni wrapped in pure gold which can be dated back to the Dalai Lama V; palm leaf manuscript; colored Thangka drawn with golden powder as well as the innumerable BuddhistScriptures.
