Tibet adds three new wetland nature reserves             

The Tibet Autonomous Regional Government officially approved three regional-level wetland nature reserves, namely, Sangsang,Ngangzi Co-Maerxia Co and Ra'og Lake wetlands.

Tibet currently has 45 nature reserves of various kinds, which cover a total area of 41.26 million ha, 34.3 percent of China's landmass.

The newly approved nature reserves cover a combined area of 106,663 ha and are alpine wetlands with lakes on the Tibetan Plateau, according to an official of the Regional Environmental Protection Bureau.

The reserves serve as the breeding habitats of some plateau bird species such as black-necked cranes, and are considered ideal places for research into plateau lakes, the official added.

Up to now, Tibet has spent more than nine billion yuan ($ 1.32 billion) protecting and building its ecological environment.
