Daming Lake, known as the “Pearl of Jinan”, is a natural scene rarely seen in a modern environment and one of the three places of interests of Jinan City. The lake is famous for the constant water level all the year round, so there is no worrying about too much or too little rainfall. The myth lies in the north gate of the lake and igneous rocks in the lake bottom. When the rain is heavy, the water can flow out through the gate. When no rain gets in, the waterproof igneous rocks can keep the springs from draining away. Daming Lake Park has an area of 86 square hectares, 46 of which is covered by Daming Lake. The park is rich in beautiful and pleasant scenery, with water sparkling in the sunlight, birds flying in the sky, fishes jumping out of the water, and boats shuttling back and forth on the lake. Places of cultural sites in the park are also another attraction to the tourists. The most popular are Lixia Pavilion, TIegong Hall (in memory of Tie Xuan, a stateman in the Ming Dynasty) and Beiji Temple (the biggest Daoism temple in Jinan). Lotus flower has been growing in Daming Lake since very ancient time and is now regarded as the city flower. When it comes to July and August, lotus flowers grow luxuriantly and present their best shape to the visitors. The lotus exhibition is a special event in the park, aiming at giving more publicity to lotus and highlighting the noble character of both flowers and humans. Dragon-boat race is another public activity full of fu
n and cultural significance.
