Dunhuang Transportation
Dunhuang is located in the Northwest of China. In ancient times, it was the hinterland of Silk Road, connecting China and the western countries. It was also an important city of prosperity where business caravans along with camels came through continuously from thousands of miles away. Today, there are many types of vehicles which enter this Northwest city of China; it can be accessed via a plane, a train and an automobile, this has made it faster and more convenient to get to this city.
By air
Dunhuang airport is located east of Dunhuang, which is 13 kilometers away from the city center. Fixed routes from Dunhuang to Lanzhou, Xi'an, Jiayuguan, Beijing, Urumqi and other cities have been opened now and there are 38 flights every week. In addition, if you take a taxi from the airport to the city it wouldn’t take too much time or money, so it is very convenient.
By train
There are two train stations in Dunhuang, they are Liuyuan Station and Dunhuang station. Liuyuan Station is approximately 128 km northwest of Dunhuang City, so you can take the train to Liuyuan Station first and then take a bus to Dunhuang City. It also has a direct route to Shanghai, Beijing, Xi'an, Chengdu, Lanzhou, Urumqi and other cities. Dunhuang train station is about 11 kilometers east of Dunhuang, you can take Bus NO.3 to get to the city center from the station. The distance from Jiayuguan to Dunhuang is approximately 400 kilometers which is about a 5 hour train ride. The existing three trips are K591; K9667; and 7527. In addition, there are two trains from Lanzhou to Dunhuang, K9667 and K591, both of them are evening-to-morning trains. As Dunhuang railway keeps extending to the Golmud railway and Qinghai-Tibet Railway, it will become a railway transportation hub and will be the second largest railway station after Lanzhou station in Gansu province.
By coach bus
Also a good way for tourists to travel is to take a coach bus to cities like Jiuquan, Lanzhou, Hami, Turpan, Urumqi, Xi'an, Golmud City, etc. If you want to take a trip to Tibet, you can choose the coach bus to Golmud first and then transfer to Lhasa. There are straight wide asphalt roads leading to many attractions except Yadan Gobi which is a desert sand road. Dunhuang bus station is located in Mingshan Road opposite the Feitian Hotel. There are daily cars heading to Lanzhou, Xi’ning, Urumqi, Golmud, Jiayuguan, etc. Jiayuguan station has a total of 4 cars bound for Dunhuang station every 9: 00, 10: 30, 11: 30, 14: 30, and it will take about 4-5 hours to get there.
