  Shigatse Transportation

Shigatse is the second largest city of Tibet which is about 300 km away from Lhasa (the capital and the largest city in Tibet). In addition to its beautiful natural scenery, Shigatse also possesses a unique religious culture composed by a large amount of cultural landscapes, which is best for tourists to trace the history of Tibet's social development. Despite its inconvenient transportation, Shigatse is a place where people who love to travel must go!

By air

Shigatse Airport is the fifth civil airport in Tibet after Gongga Airport, Qamdo Bangda airport, Nyingchi Millington Airport and Ngari Kunsha Airport. It has greatly enhanced the navigation capability of Tibet and improved layout of the region's air transport network and integrated transport system.

By train
The railway in Shigatse has not been built yet but the construction of the planned Lhasa-Shigatse railway line as the extension of Qinghai-Tibet railway line was started on September 26, 2010. The process will take about 4 years and the trains will reach speeds of 120 km per hour. Furthermore, another railway line from Shigatse to Yadong County will also pass the Shigatse City which will definitely break the no-railway history in Shigatse.

Traffic in the city
Shigatse is not very big, so walking throughout the city is convenient enough to get around. In addition to walking, hiring a car is also a very common mode of transportation which is favored by most tourists. Beside these two modes mentioned above, there is another special vehicle in Shigatse, which are the well-known tricycles. Taking these traditional tricycles you can not only leisurely enjoy the beauty of the city but also experience a totally different kind of travel.

Word of advice: phones in Lhasa, Lazi, Shigatse can get signal but other places may not get as good of a signal. In addition, because there is no electricity in the Rongbuk Temple and Everest Base Camp it will be necessary to bring a backup battery for your cell phone and digital devices before your trip here.
