Farmers in Shigatse celebrate the New Year four times a year: January 1st in the Gregorian calendar, the Spring Festival in lunar calendar, Tibetan New year of Tibet and of Tsang.Farmers in Nianchu River value the Tsang Tibetan New year most and celebrate it grandly and boisterously.
Tsang area honored as “land of dances and songs” has various folk dances of great feature in different regions. Folk songs also have diversified forms, such as love songs, pastorals, toasting songs, blessing songs, some of which are made by people of all ages in their labors and lives just for self-entertainment.
Tsang is also regarded as the birth land of Tibetan Opera. Excellent Tibetan Operas like Princess Wencheng, Salang Girl and Prince Nuosang are not only performed frequently in Tibet, but also very popular abroad.
Shigatse now has one professional artistic performance group and two non-professional artistic propaganda teams. Some masses from countryside are formed into Tibetan Opera teams spontaneously. There are four regional art houses and county culture centres, 16 Xinhua Bookstores and 2 cinemas. The number of new entertainment and cultural facilities like videotape and VCD halls, karaoke etc. is continuously growing.
