Entertainment in Guiyang is full of variety, including the night market, KTV, night clubs, and so on. These activities are quite popular especially among many young people. In Guiyang, the famous night markets consist of Hequn Road, which is lined with a variety of snacks and the Yan'an Middle Road, which is full of notions, clothing, and general merchandise. Clubbing is also an indispensable living forum for young people, there are a lot of Tea Bars, Disco Bars, and pubs, which is mainly scattered along the Shaanxi Road, Beijing Road, and Hequn Road.
Many local people in Guiyang like to go to a quiet, elegant tea bar to enjoy the scented tea and watch the local cultural performances at the same time. Guiyang folk cultural activities have a long history in various forms, and the following several are quite famous.
Folk opera
The folk opera in Guizhou has a long history, and there are many different kinds of it including Qian Opera, Lantern Opera, and Di Opera which is popular in Han nationality area and Dong Opera, Buyi Opera which is popular in ethnic minority concentrated area. Qian Opera, also known as Guizhou Bangzi, is filled with local characteristics; Lantern Opera is derived from the local "lantern" songs and dances, and the main plays of this kind of opera are "Shelang" and "Dianxing Renjia". Another kind of opera, Anshun Di Opera, is commonly referred as “a living fossil” of Chinese opera. In the past, it was called “Tiaoshen”, which has the meaning of exorcism ritual and pray for peace, and it has now become an entertainment activity.
Lusheng Dance
Lusheng is an ancient reed pipe instrument made of bamboo, the length of large ones can reach ten feet and that of small ones is less than one foot. As for the number of the pipes which make up the instrument ranging from single or double pipes to 10 and the most common is 6 pipes. The tone of Lusheng can be forcefully low, and it can also be crisp and sonorous. In the development history of Chinese Hmong culture, Lusheng was not only regarded as the representative of the Hmong ethnic group in China but also put into the dance and music Lusheng dance is also very popular among other ethnic groups’ traditional dance including Buyi, Yao, and Yi.
In Lusheng Dance, males play the Lusheng and females dance, or they dance as playing the Lusheng by themselves. The dance steps are fast-paced and full of passion; some dance steps even absorb Hmong martial arts and acrobatics action. Lusheng Dance has become an essential activity in the celebration of many festival of Guizhou.
Bullfighting
Bullfighting is a popular activity in suburban or rural area of Guiyang. Unlike the world-famous Spain Bullfighting which is between humans and bulls, this is a fight between farm cattle.
The bullfighting time is from the Lunar June to August after rice transplanting and before the harvest. Bulls about to play the competition are called "Balang" and in order to express the wish for Balang’s victory, families and friends of the bull’s owner will treat him to a drink. The fighting is extremely spectacular with shouting from spectators and rumbling of fireworks. You can’t miss it!
